People often ask me about having their pupils dilated during an eye exam. Now the reason we dilate is the make the pupil larger so that we have a more extensive view of the inside of the eye. Some of the side affects of being dilated include: light sensitivity, and poor reading vision from anywhere from 2 to 4 hours. Now if you are a very healthy young person with good vision, you probably should be dilated every 4 to 5 years. However, certainly if you’ve had an eye injury, if you are diabetic, of if there is a problem in your eye that the doctor needs to follow, you may need to be dilated every 6 months to a year. Ask your doctor about having your pupils dilated, they will give you a reason why they should or should not.
