A condition called nyctalopia or night blindness, makes it hard to see well at night or in poor lighting. It’s not a disease, but more of a symptom of another problem like untreated nearsightedness.
What Causes It?
The condition comes from a disorder of the cells in your retina that allow you to see dim light. It also has many causes:
- Glaucoma medications that close the pupil
- Retinitis pigmentosa
- Vitamin A deficiency
To be sure of the exact cause, your eye doctor will want to carry out a full exam. Specialized tests may be required.
How Is Night Blindness Treated?
Treatment depends on the cause. It could be as simple as a new prescription for glasses or even a new medication. It could also require surgery if cataracts may be to blame.
If you have trouble seeing at night be sure to check with your eye doctor today!
